Open House Brooklyn (OHBK), established in 2010, is a Brooklyn-based community arts initiative dedicated to accessible pop-up art shows and events, creative therapeutic workshops, and, as of 2024, Continuing Education programming for Licensed Creative Arts Therapists. Initially established in response to the exclusivity often found in the NYC art scene at the time—and inspired by the synchronicity of many supportive creatives living within a small radius—OHBK evolved through a ground-up process shaped by creative synergy. We began as an exhibition series—based on experiential process and held in alternative spaces throughout Brooklyn. These shows functioned as intentional counter-spaces, with a strong focus on accessibility, mutual support, and a DIY ethos. In keeping with the values that sparked OHBK, our CE programming is designed to be participatory, affirming, and rooted in the same spirit of radical inclusion—for presenters and participants alike. Centered in anti-oppressive practice, we offer low-cost and sliding-scale courses that uplift diverse perspectives and challenge the status quo in Art Therapy. We aim to reimagine continuing education as a space for creative exchange and collective growth—spaces that feel more like community labs than classrooms.
Led by Director, Artist/Art Therapist, Melissa Díaz, Open House BK continues to host exhibitions & community arts events. This site is dedicated specifically to our Continuing Education programming. Melissa Díaz is recognized by the New York State Education Department's State Board for Mental Health Practitioners as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed creative arts therapists.
