Explore how dualities manifest in the personal lives of our clients and ourselves within practice. In examining dual emotions, bilateral drawing becomes a powerful tool for integrating these opposites and helping clients access deeper emotional states, resolve conflicts, and promote healing. The duality and bilateral drawing framework encourages creative exploration of emotions in opposition to each other through stimulating both sides of the brain which can help process memories and emotions. When done in the safe space of a therapeutic setting, we can help clients foster empathy, understanding, and a deeper connection to themselves.
Theoretical foundations of duality in psychology revolve around the understanding that opposites—whether they are internal psychological conflicts, polar emotions, or existential tensions—are an inherent part of the human experience. Therapy provides a space for individuals to explore and integrate these dualities, leading to greater self-awareness, emotional balance, and personal growth. Whether through Jungian integration, DBT’s dialectics, Gestalt’s paradoxical change, or existential exploration of life and death, addressing and holding space for duality is crucial for healing and self-actualization.
Through this workshop, participants will identify dualities that come up in the therapeutic space, how to address them through creative directives, and how to apply theoretical concepts to better understand the meaning and depths of duality.
